How to Play Teen Patti (3 Patti): Simple Rules & Hands Guide
Diwali celebrations in India simply aren't complete without the clinking of chips, tea cups, laughter, and someone shouting: "Chalo, Teen Patti lagao!"
Teen Patti (which literally translates to "Three Cards") is often called the Indian cousin of poker. But unlike Texas Hold'em where you have to wait for community cards and do math on 7 cards, Teen Patti is lightning fast: everyone gets exactly 3 cards, and the strongest 3-card hand takes the entire pot! Here is everything you need to know to play with family or on your phone like a pro.
Teen Patti Hand Rankings (From Best to Worst)
Before you place a bet, memorize this 6-tier ranking:

The Golden Rule: "Blind" vs "Seen" Players
This is the secret sauce that makes Teen Patti so exciting! When the dealer hands you your 3 cards face-down, you have a choice:
1. Playing "Blind" (Andha)
You choose not to look at your cards! Because you are taking a bigger risk by playing in the dark, the game rewards you: you only have to pay half the bet! (For example, if the current table bet is ₹10, a Blind player only pays ₹10).
2. Playing "Seen" (Chaalandar)
You peek at your 3 cards. Now you know exactly what you're holding! But because you have the advantage of information, you must pay double the current bet (e.g. ₹20 instead of ₹10) to stay in the hand!
What is a "Sideshow" (Compromise)?
If you and the player sitting right before you have both looked at your cards ("Seen"), on your turn you can ask them for a Sideshow.
If they accept, both of you secretly compare your 3 cards without showing the rest of the table. Whoever has the weaker hand must immediately fold! This is an awesome tactic to eliminate a strong competitor early in the hand.
When Does the "Show" Happen?
Betting continues around the table until only two players are left standing. At that point, one player can pay for a "Show" to force both players to flip their cards face-up. The player with the higher-ranked hand sweeps the entire pot!
3 Tips to Play Smart & Have Fun
- Play Blind for the First Few Rounds: Playing blind is cheap and puts tremendous pressure on Seen players who have mediocre pairs or high cards.
- Pack (Fold) Bad Cards Early: If you look at your cards and see a 2, 7, and 9 with mixed suits, pack immediately. Don't throw away chips hoping for a miracle!
- Treat It as Pure Entertainment: Card games with friends are all about fun, teasing each other, and laughing over bluffs. Always play with coins, matches, or within a very small friendly budget!
